What Is Hypnosis?

a cooperative interaction in which you respond to the suggestions of the hypnotist. While hypnosis has become well-known thanks to popular acts where people are prompted to performs unusual or ridiculous actions, the technique has also been clinically proven to provide medical and therapeutic benefits, most notably in the reduction of pain and anxiety.

The "hypnotic state" is a lot like day dreaming. Your mind floats between fully awake and sound asleep when you are in the hypnotic state.
person sleeping

your body and the conscious mind are in a relaxed neutral state while your subconscious mind remains awake and receptive to suggestion.

This relaxed yet focused state of awareness and sensitivity allows you to examine and change negative thought and behavioral patterns acquired through life experiences and accept positive and healing suggestions while in the hypnotic state.

Are You Hypnotizable?

Most people think they aren't. But, in fact, 95% of people are hypnotizable.

How do you measure up?

The following quiz is weighted for you to gain a better understanding into how you might react in different situations and how those reactions form patterns to determine how you process information.

Are You Hypnotizable?

A Very Brief History of Hypnosis

Franz Mesmer was the first to practice mesmerism (later renamed to hypnosis). He founded a school in Vienna, where he practised healing through animal magnetism, harnessing the magnetic fluid through pieces of iron and conductive minerals, that he placed upon the diseased spots on the patients' bodies.

John Elliotson demonstrated that mesmerism could be used effectively in illnesses associated with the nervous system and as an anesthesia in surgical procedures. James Esdaille had a wide reputation amongst the European and indigenous communities for painless surgeries (including amputations) using hypnosis.

1795- 1860

James Braid, often regarded as the "father of hypnosis", established hypnosis as an area of scientific, rather than occult, interest. He also coined the word "hypnosis" itself, taking it from the Greek word for sleep (hypnos). Braid's work led to the development of hypnosis as a medical technique.

Hypnosis today follows similar patterns to those which were laid down by Erickson and Elman. It is a brief, solution-focused practice, using rapid or indirect techniques, and totally guided by the client. In this respect, it is different from the authoritarian and lengthy methods of the 19th century, but it's essentially doing the same thing - bringing about profound healing and change.

Your brain has the ability to make you ill when stress in your life produces neck pain, headaches, heartburn and more. By using hypnosis to harness the amazing power of our brains we can take our bodies and lives in another direction of ultimate health and wellness.

Pierre Janet focused on psychological factors in hypnosis and contributed to the modern concept of mental and emotional disorders involving anxiety, phobias, and other abnormal behaviour. Clark L. Hull, is often credited with having begun the modern study of hypnosis. His work Hypnosis and Suggestibility (1933) was a rigorous study of the phenomenon, using statistical and experimental analysis.

Sigmund Freud's introduction to hypnotherapy and to the stunning revelations it elicited from mentally ill patients led him to develop a revolutionary theory of the mind and of the dynamics underlying human behavior.

Milton H. Erickson pioneered "indirect hypnosis", the subtle language patters designed to shift a patient's perception of themselves and their problems, without necessarily resorting to formal, eyes-closed inductions.

Dave Elman is perhaps less well-known, but his book Hypnotherapy is regarded as a classic in its field.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Hypnosis Make Me Do Something Against My Will?

  • This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions in the field of hypnosis.
  • An individual under hypnosis will never do anything or accept any suggestion that violates their morals or values.
  • When someone is called onto a stage during a hypnotic show and doing things they would not normally do,

the truth is these individuals have a hidden desire to be an entertainer or the life of the party. A stage hypnotist is trained to select the most suggestible and willing subjects to enhance the show.

Will Hypnosis Make Me Tell Secrets I Don't Want to Share?

  • A person under hypnosis will not share any information that they would not ordinarily share when fully conscious.
  • The hypnotic client is always in control.
  • Your brain does not stop functioning or reasoning when under hypnosis.
  • Your secrets will stay safely locked inside your brain for as long as you like.

Can Most
Individuals Be

  • In the late 1950's Stanford University was the first to establish a reliable "yardstick" of susceptiblity (aptly called the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale).
  • Through subsequent studies researchers learned that 95% of the population can be hypnotized to some extent with (most people scoring in the midrange of the Stanford Scale). These studies also revealed that an individual's ability to respond to hypnosis remains remarkably stable over time.
  • Find out how you measure up by taking the following quiz.

    Are You Hypnotizable?

  • Hypnosis is a natural state of mind.
  • Many people go in and out of the hypnotic state on a daily basis.

  • If you have ever driven a car from point A to point B without really knowing how you got there, you may have been in a state of hypnosis. Your subconscious mind was driving the car.

  • If you have ever been so focused on a movie that you didn't notice what was going on around you or you felt like you were part of the movie, experiencing the same fears or tears as the characters, then you may have been in the relaxed hypnotic state.

Group Sessions

Group hypnosis sessions offer the benefit of being able to participate in our programs with a lower economic investment. Making the choice to attend a group hypnosis session allows you to save money, while benefiting from positive suggestions for change.

If you have never been to a hypnotist, this is an excellent method to learn about and experience the power of hypnosis. You can bring friends or even arrange a private group of your own (minimum 6 people).

Our most popular group sessions are for Smoking Cessation, Weight Loss, and Stress.

We also hold workshops for other topics, and periodically have group programs for topics such as Motivation, Goal-Setting, Sugar Addiction, and more.

In a group session, the hypnotist will be giving suggestions that are effective to the group as a whole. For many people, this is just what they need and works well! Others feel they need the personal attention in order to see results.

Our group sessions are generally an average of 5-10 people; individual sessions are always 1-on-1. For a detailed list of the individual sessions that we offer please refer to Our Services.

Group sessions can be delivered at your office or our center!

Please call 302-834-4444 for details if you are interested in scheduling a group session.
